In 1988 the SIA developed the Pollution Prevention & Waste Minimization Program (PPWMP) to track data derived from the annual Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) program of the the EPA.  These data are downloaded and stratified into numerous tabular and graphic data presentations by chemical, facility etc.  Data analyses provided by the program have been used to support semiconductor industry activities associated with the EPA's proposed MACT standards.  The data analyses are also used by the SIA's Environmental Safety & Health Committee to benchmark the industry's performance with respect to pollution prevention activities, reduction of emissions of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), etc.  In 2001 this program was expanded under the direction of the SIA's Environmental Metrics Subcommittee and renamed as the Environmental Metrics Program (EMP).  Individual companies use these data analyses for benchmarking purposes.
